Introducing a new Bellies Feature 5 Minutes in the Box , about our players
for the 2009 season, by Salmonbellies PR Director Carly Rigby
On the night of the WLA draft last month, Martin Cummings was
extremely nervous, and, along with every other player at the Fireman’s
Hall or watching from homes and from dorm rooms across the continent,
he was anxious to see where he’d end up.
“I was always hoping to be chosen by the Salmonbellies,” he said.
“When their third pick came up, I held my breath, crossed my fingers
and it was a totally surreal feeling when they called my name.”
The top scorer from last year’s Poco Saints, Cummings put up 57 points
in 21 games during the 2008 season, leading the team in both goals and
assists. He had another 11 points in just 4 post-season matches.
Cummings sees himself as a dedicated and hard working player and is
excited to join the Senior Salmonbellies and to contribute as much as
possible to an already talented offensive group. Assistant General Manager,
Ken Thomas, called his style “a ‘first to come to the yard and last to leave’
mentality” and feels that will fit in perfectly with the club’s culture.
“Poco doesn’t have a senior A team, so growing up, I always knew that
eventually I’d have to leave the black and gold behind. The Salmonbellies
are such a historic lacrosse organization, it feels great to now be a part of that.”
Cummings’ dedication to the game does not end when he leaves the floor.
He works at a local lacrosse shop and, in his spare time, is the assistant for
the Poco midget team that his father coaches.
