Kurtz Breaks Through as Bellies Power Past Thunder
The New Westminster Salmonbellies delivered another dominant performance last week, winning a key game to remain tied for first place in the Western Lacrosse Association. In a game marked by explosive offense and standout individual efforts, the Bellies continued to show why they’re a force to be reckoned with in the 2025 season.
Leading the charge was newcomer Tye Kurtz, who lit the lamp for the first time as a Salmonbellie, then kept on scoring, registering 2 goals and 6 helpers on the night and earning both the B&B Contracting Beast of the Game and First Star honours. His breakout performance energized both the team and a vocal crowd at Queen’s Park Arena.
Kurtz wasn't the only multipoint player in the game. Mitch Jones continues to fire on all cylinders, as he put 5 goals behind the Thunder netminders and dished four helpers to others. Will Malcom (3-4-7) and Ryan Martel (2-1-3) broke the ice with their first goals of the season, while Haiden Dickson (2-4-5), Tyler Pace (1-3-4) and Logan Schuss (1-2-3) all kept up their early scoring success. The scoring was started by newly acquired Preston Lupul with his first as a senior Bellie.
The Bellies’ high-powered offense continues to impress, now with 41 goals in just three games—an average of 13 per contest—and a +13 goal differential. Not far behind are the Victoria Shamrocks, who sit at 4-0 on the season with a +11 differential over four games. The latest win gives New West a share of first place in the WLA, setting up what’s sure to be a thrilling race as the season heats up.
On special teams, the Bellies remain lethal, boasting the league’s top powerplay at 64% while also holding the second-best penalty kill at 75%, just a .15% notch behind Victoria. Team discipline is positive as well, with New West sitting fourth in penalty minutes at 54—well behind Maple Ridge’s league-leading 79.
The Salmonbellies return to Queen’s Park Arena this Thursday at 7:30 PM to face the Burnaby Lakers, who are still hunting for their first win of the season.
Fans are encouraged to join the party before the game. Before every home game, take advantage of the Stonehaus Tailgate Party which starts at 5 PM at 718 - 2nd Street, featuring free food, Bellies Beer for purchase, ticket giveaways, and prizes before fans walk over to the game.
If the early season is any indication, the Bellies are building something special—and our fans are taking notice.
