Senior Salmonbellies add Elite Goaltender Higgins to Lineup

by Paul Horn

The New Westminster Salmonbellies Senior A Lacrosse Club announced today that they have added star goaltender Zach Higgins to their line-up.

Higgins is currently the starting goaltender for the Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League. During his summers, he has played for the Brooklin Lacrosse Club in Ontario’s Major Series Lacrosse, but he will be coming out west for the 2022 Western Lacrosse Association season.

Longtime Salmonbellie forward, Kevin Crowley, who plays alongside Higgins in the NLL, describes him as one of the best goalies in the game. “He has been a brick wall for the Wings all season. I’ve never seen a goalie prepare so in-depth for a game like he does.” Crowley credits Higgins for the fact that the Wings are in the NLL playoffs. “He has bailed our Wings team out time and time again. I cannot wait for Bellies fans to see him play!”

Salmonbellies GM, Ray Porcellato, is thrilled to see Higgins coming west. “He is a world class, elite goaltender and will surely play a key role in our quest for our 25th Mann Cup.”

At 31 years old, Higgins is in his prime years as a goalie, and his NLL stats tell the story. At the end of the NLL season, he stood third in saves (688) and fifth in save percentage (80.1%), over 17 games. The Courtice, Ontario native entered senior lacrosse in 2012 with Brooklin and professional lacrosse in 2013 with the Minnesota Swarm. At 6’1” and 225 pounds, he is known as a nimble and athletic goaltender.

As for Higgins, playing with the Salmonbellies is a chance to excel.  "I couldn't be more excited to be joining the New Westminster Salmonbellies. I understand the importance of what good leadership and experience looks like and this feels like a really special opportunity for me. This roster is full of guys who have been through what it takes to win at the highest level, which  made joining this group an easy decision. New Westminster is a historic organization within the Canadian lacrosse landscape, and I intend to bring everything I have to represent their history in the best way I know... winning a Mann Cup."

Higgins is currently gearing up for the first round of the NLL playoffs. The Philadelphia Wings will visit the San Diego Seals in a one-game playoff this Saturday, May 7th.
