UPDATE: Controversial Lacrosse Canada Decision Leaves Malcom and Messenger on the Mann Cup Sidelines

by Salmonbellies Lacrosse

A few days ago, we proudly told the story of Will Malcom and Mike Messenger being added to the Shamrocks‘ Mann Cup roster.  Apparently, that story was premature.

The story behind the scenes has played out in leaks on Twitter over the last few days, but a statement from the WLA today tells the full story.  In summary, Lacrosse Canada’s Board of Directors has overturned the rule to allow the use of call-up players, despite it being previously approved at the National level by a vote of 10-1.  Worse yet, the rule changed while the Shamrocks were travelling to Hagersville, meaning that they must now play short two players.  Malcom and Messenger are with the team, and have waited patiently to hear what was to be decided.  After much deliberation, the Shamrocks have decided to play the series.  British Columbia fans can watch for free here.

The WLA’s statement is the strongest in recent memory, and echoes much of the sentiment being expressed by players and the lacrosse community.  For most, it is simply unfathomable that this decision could be made at this time and in this way, but it is sure to provide extra motivation to the Victoria squad.

The Bellies wish them well in their quest to bring the Mann Cup to the West.
